Fire Prevention Week 2015 Fire Prevention Week is always held the week of October 9th, to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. Each year, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) announces a theme for the week; this year, it is "Hear The Beep Where You Sleep!"
When it comes to smoke alarms, it’s about “location, location, location”.
The key message of this year's Fire Prevention Week campaign, October 4-10, is to install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level of your home, including the basement. Larger homes may need more alarms.
Throughout the month of October, firefighters from the West Valley FD will visited with approximately 3000 kids at our local elementary schools to provide fire safety education.

Pizza Safety You may not have young children in your house, but you may have to pet-proof your home. Watch the video on the right to see a mischievous puppy steal a few slices of pizza while his owners are in the other room. The pup's foot turns on the stove knob, which heats up the box enough for ignition-it only takes a few moments! As a side note, the owners have since installed child-proof covers on their stove knobs.
Sparky the Fire Dog is always a big hit wherever he goes--the kids love him. And now, Sparky even has his own web site, full of fun games and things for kids (and some adults). Just click on the link to the right.

Electrical Lines and Cords An all too common cause fire, especially in homes, is the misuse of extension cords. Extension cords are all rated for a certain load carrying capability. This means if you try to run an air conditioner with a rated load of 15 amps, with a cord rated for 10 amps, the cord well soon start heating-up and may catch fire or may catch something it is touching on fire. Be sure that your cord is heavy enough for the load you are placing on it.
Is Your Address Visible? Many times, an emergency response is slowed because we cannot locate an address quickly. You can help us to help you by making sure your address is on your house and visible from the street. In most cases, if the numbers are 6" or taller, we will be able to see them. The numbers should be in a contrasting color from the background, and not hidden by trees or shrubbery.
